Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC

The publisher we
wish had existed.

Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC offers complete publishing services: editing, production, design, and distribution, at honest and transparent prices. No hidden fees. No fine print. We have experienced predatory publishing firsthand. We built this company so you don't have to.

Our Foundation

Three commitments we don't negotiate.

I

Transparent

Our pricing is published upfront. No setup fees buried in the contract, no surprise charges at final delivery, no hidden percentages. What you are quoted is what you pay. Period.

II

Author-First

Your manuscript is your work. We handle the production; you keep your rights, your voice, and your vision. Our job is to serve your book, not our bottom line.

III

Honest

We have been on the wrong side of a predatory publishing contract: $28,000 for promises kept on paper and ignored in practice. We built Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC to be the publisher we needed and could not find.

A publishing house built on experience, and hard lessons.

Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC was founded by Butch Alford in Pueblo, Colorado after a firsthand encounter with predatory publishing. The goal was simple: build the company that should have existed, one that treats authors fairly, prices honestly, and actually cares whether the work reaches its readers.

We are currently publishing our founders' own titles, theological writing, young adult fiction, and children's books, as the proving ground for the full publishing services we are building toward. When we take on your manuscript, we will know exactly what we are doing, because we did it ourselves first.

About the Founder

The person behind the work.

Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC is built around authors who write from conviction: scholars and storytellers committed to getting it right.

Butch Alford
Founder · Author · Editorial Director

Butch Alford is the founder and sole member of Just-a-Thought Publications LLC, where he serves as author, publisher, and editorial director: a Christian writer whose work spans five decades of independent biblical study, a five-book young adult series, and children's fiction designed to be safe on every shelf.

The storyteller was born on a small farm in the Oregon Coast Range, where he spent his grade-school years in near-total solitude. Imagination wasn't a hobby. It was what he had. He has described those years as a living version of Neil Diamond's Shiloh: a boy, a stretch of land, and the worlds he built inside his own head. That wellspring has never dried up.

The scholar was born in 1974. At twenty-two years old, he surrendered his life to Yeshua, and from that moment, he wanted to understand what he had given himself to. Not the Western tradition handed down through centuries of institutional religion, but the real thing: the text, the language, the world behind the words. Over fifty years, he has studied Hebrew, Aramaic, and Koine Greek: not to speak them, but to hear them. His aim has always been meaning over familiarity.

His working life has carried him through law enforcement, large-scale industrial controls, nuclear security, and Army Demilitarization work for the DOD. But the throughline was always Scripture and story: two disciplines that demand the same thing. Go to the source. Don't take someone else's word for it.

As a fiction author, Alford writes for readers he respects. The five-book Screaming Mountain series and the standalone literary mystery The Mystery of Lake Black are young adult fiction written without violence, without political agenda, and without content that asks parents to second-guess what their children are reading. His children's titles hold the same standard. Every title under the Just-a-Thought imprint is something a family can hand down.

That experience, including a $28,000 lesson in what dishonest publishing looks like, is precisely why Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC exists for other writers. Alford knows what it feels like to trust a publisher, sign a contract, and watch the promises evaporate. He built Just-a-Thought Publications to be the company he needed and could not find: transparent pricing, honest representation, no hidden fees, and a publisher who actually cares whether your book reaches its readers. If you are a writer looking for someone who has been where you are and built something better because of it. This is that place.

Services

What Just-a-Thought offers authors.

We are a small press, selective by necessity and by design. When we take on a project, it receives the same care we give our own titles. No assembly line, no upsells, no inflated timelines.

Editorial Consultation

Honest manuscript evaluation from a reader who has spent decades inside both scholarly and popular texts. We tell you what the work needs, not what you want to hear.

Manuscript Development

Structural and line-level editing for theological nonfiction, literary fiction, middle-grade and YA, and children's books. We work in the text, not at arm's length from it.

Layout & Formatting

Professional typesetting and interior layout for both digital and print-ready files. Clean, readable design without the design agency overhead. Print-on-demand coordination available.

Digital Distribution

Just-a-Thought distributes its own titles freely. For aligned projects, we can help structure a free-distribution model, working through the right platforms for reach without cost to the reader.

Theological Review

Manuscript review for theological accuracy from a Hebraic-framework perspective: primary text engagement, original language check, and cultural context. Available as a standalone service.

Podcast Production

Production support for the Just-a-Thought Podcast and aligned content programs. Scripting, packaging, and episode structuring. Available to select partner projects in future cycles.

We are selective by conviction, not just by capacity. Just-a-Thought Publications, LLC does not publish everything submitted to us. We publish work we can stand behind: theologically grounded nonfiction, biographies, true stories, fiction that families can trust, and children's books that earn a place on the shelf for years. Violence-free. Politically neutral. Safe for the readers we have made a commitment to. If your manuscript reflects those values, we want to hear from you. If it does not, we are not the right press for your work, and we will tell you that honestly.
A note on our current capacity. Just-a-Thought Publications is a one-person operation in active catalog development. External author services are not yet formally open. If your project is a strong fit, particularly theological nonfiction or literary fiction for young readers, we are glad to hear from you. Reach out at just-a-thought_info@proton.me and describe the project in a paragraph.
